Screening of "The Wedding"

Tuesday, April 8 at 7:00 PM.

"Love and Marriage, you can't have one without the other."    Join us for a video presentation of the BBC documentary "The Wedding" chronicling the love story of Grainne and Shannon who were the first same-sex couple to be married in a civil partnership ceremony in the United Kingdom.  Grainne and Shannon will be here from Belfast, Northern Ireland to talk about their experience firsthand, following the screening.  A small reception will follow their talk.

 

"Boys Just Want To Have Fun" 

Friday, April 25 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.

This Eroticizing Safer Sex Workshop for men will be facilitated by GMHC.  Easy talk, hard questions.  Find out what’s safe, what’s not and what’s hot!  Light supper and refreshments provided.

Thursday, March 27 – 6:00 to 8:00 PM – HOPE FOR LOVE: LAWRENCE KING VIGIL at the Unitarian Church of Staten Island, 312 Fillmore Street, New Brighton.  The Gay Straight Alliance of Staten Island Technical High School and Community Health Action invite you to celebrate the memory of Lawrence King, a victim of a vicious hate crime, as well as discuss issues that affect our community.  (S-40 on Richmond Terrace to Clinton Avenue.  Walk one block up Clinton to Fillmore)

 

Tuesday, April 29 – Equality & Justice Day in Albany – Join with fellow Staten Islanders as we board a bus to the NYS capital to advocate with our local legislators for LGBT rights including the Gender Expression Non- Discrimination Act (GENDA), the Dignity for all Students Act (to ensure safety in our schools and put an end to bullying, harassment and discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity/expression) and Marriage Equality for same-sex couples. NEW AT THE CENTER:

 

Tuesday, April 1 - at 7:30 PM:Trans Empowerment Meeting – A community-building event for adults (18+) who identify as transgender or gender variant and their allies. 

Wednesday, April 16 – at 7:30 PM: Gay and Bi Men's Rap Group - This new, informal gathering will explore issues of concern to gay and bisexual males.  First topic:  "Coming Out and Being Out on Staten Island." 

  

CENTER COMMITTEE MEETINGS

 

Tuesday, March 25 – at 7:00 PM: Pride Planning Committee meeting -  Help with the planning of the 2008 Staten Island Pride Parade and Festival.

 

Wednesday, April 2 – at 7:00 PM: Social Events Committee meeting -  Help with ideas and planning of a dinner-dance and other social events for the Staten Island LGBT community.

 

 

ONGOING GROUPS AT THE CENTER:

 

PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) provides encouragement and support to all family members and LGBT people dealing with issues raised when a loved one comes out.  [Fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 PM.  For more information email: statenisland@pflagnyc.org]

Rainbow & Friends – Meeting for LGBT AA members and their allies. [Weekly on Thursdays at 7:00 PM.]

Rainbow Families – lesbian and gay parents, their children and allies. [Third Sundays of each month at the Staten Island Children's Museum, Snug Harbor, from 10 AM to Noon.]

Safe Space – ongoing support group for LGBT teens ages 13-17.  There are two groups each week.  Call The Center to register at (718) 808-1351.

Legally Queer – ongoing support group for young people ages 18-24.  Meets weekly.  Call The Center to register at (718) 808-1351.

BOSS (Being Out Staying Safe): This is a really fun series of 6 workshops for LGBT youth only. In a small group of no more than 8 people, we talk about sex, learn about safer sex and what that means for gay teens. Social Network Peer Recruiters (for youth 18 to 24 years): Get trained as a peer recruiter and become part of our LGBT youth outreach team! Learn outreach skills and become an expert on HIV and STI prevention. Our outreach team is the heart of our program, helping to organize events, recruit new peers and spread the word on safer sex and  HIV/STI education and prevention.
